Costco and TJX Companies should be able to manage the emerging transition to deflation by leveraging their deep value propositions to get customers to buy more. Average sale prices on other items like TVs have been lower while unit sales have gone higher. Membership fee revenue is some of the glue that allows Costco to keep prices so low. Costco can boost sales in either scenario by "encouraging its members to buy more items to get more savings," Feldman said. Like Costco, Feldman said the off-price retailer would need to increase revenue either through price or number of units.

For the entire grocery industry, Cowen sees AI amplifying "loyalty by harnessing customer interaction data to offer prescriptive advice." Customer experience Costco has the "unique opportunity to drill into the buying habits of their individual members," Morningstar retail analyst Noah Rohr told CNBC in an interview. Rohr believes that generative AI advancements could be as simple as making promotional emails more relevant to each individual member. The retailer utilizing its large customer data sets is "a big advantage when it comes to inventory planning," Morningstar's Rohr said. Rohr said Costco can also optimize its data with AI by making sure store employees are using their time efficiently.

A delayed spring season also pushed demand for goods such as garden equipment and outdoor supplies into the second quarter from earlier in the year, helping Lowe's and larger rival Home Depot (HD.N) top quarterly results estimates. In contrast, Home Depot said Pro-customer sales performance was slightly negative in the quarter. Same-store sales at Lowe's fell 1.6% in the second quarter ended Aug. 4, less than analysts' estimate of a 2.36% drop, according to Refinitiv data.

"While there was strength in categories associated with smaller projects, we did see continued pressure in certain big-ticket, discretionary categories," Home Depot CEO Ted Decker said in a statement. Customer transactions fell for the ninth straight quarter, down 1.8% in the second quarter, but smaller than the 4.8% fall in the first quarter. Comparable sales fell 2% in the quarter, while analysts had expected a 3.54% drop, according to Refinitiv IBES data. "Whether the bottoming in the housing market would translate to sales or not - that's where there is caution from investors," Feldman said.

'A tailwind' for private label That is good news for store brands, otherwise known as private label. Yet the biggest pure play on private label brands is Treehouse Foods , Chappell said. Another leg down for retail earnings? But it doesn't negate the main story for retailers this year: earnings estimates have been coming down hard since the summer. Beginning in June and July, analysts began aggressively cutting retail earnings estimates for the all-important holiday season. The assumption: the Fed's aggressive rate hikes would, by the end of the year, significantly slow consumer spending and likely start a recession. Nov 15 (Reuters) - Home Depot Inc (HD.N) tapped higher prices to override a drop in customer transactions for the third quarter and left its annual forecasts unchanged, signaling a weak holiday season amid a housing market slowdown. The fourth quarter will be the weakest of the year for comparable sales, it said, amid mounting uncertainties around the housing market. Home Depot saw customer transactions fall 4.3%, but higher prices of lumber, copper and other building materials helped drive average ticket - or the average amount of sales per customer - 8.8% higher, offsetting some pressure. Net earnings increased to $4.34 billion, or $4.24 per share, while analysts on average expected a profit of $4.12 per share. Shares of the company reversed course to gain about 2%, after Walmart Inc (WMT.N) raised its annual sales and profit forecasts, sending retail stocks higher.
Stifel's research found that consumers plan to spend 9% more this holiday season over 2021. Roughly three-quarters of respondents to a PwC holiday poll indicated they plan to spend the same or more this holiday season. Rather than marking down inventory, companies should hold on to it for the next year if their balance sheets can withstand it, said Siegel. Across the board, many flagship retail stores heavily focused on apparel and footwear like Kohl's and Macy's may struggle to lure customers intent on saving money on discretionary purchases. He points to names heavily focused on electronics and home goods purchased by consumers during the pandemic as one of the weaker areas this holiday season.
